Even the busiest person in real estate makes time for his super
As principal of Dethridge GROVES Real Estate in Fremantle, he has a team of property managers and sales agents to manage and inspire a business to run. As president of the REIA, he constantly has to travel, attend meetings, develop policy and advocacy initiatives, interact with state and territory institute members, and lobby government.
We spoke with Hayden recently about how he manages his time, discussed things he’s working on, and sought his insights on super.
‘It is a busy schedule and probably one that isn’t sustainable long term, but I am managing to keep perspective, enjoy a social ‘Freo’ life, and have time for family. It would be nice to have more hours in the day, but you can’t have everything!’
As president of the REIA
‘I’m a strong advocate of improving professional standards and reputation across our industry and am a vocal supporter of super. In particular, industry super, where we have representatives on both the REIA and REI Super boards. With REI Super, we have a lot of crossover in terms of our objectives and a history of engagement, which has only strengthened over time. REI Super’s partnership with the Institute at a national level helps us undertake research projects, develop policy, and effectively communicate with our membership.
An example of a current project is the development of a national licensing platform to make the state-based system function more efficiently. As it is now, members operating across state borders holding licenses in multiple states cope with unnecessary administrative duplication.’
As principal of Dethridge Groves Real Estate
‘I see a mishmash of super funds that employees have come with, some of which I’ve never even heard of. I have to wonder if they’d taken the time to do the research on which fund would serve them best.’
‘My first employer in real estate was an early adopter of REI Super and signed me up as a member. Like most younger people, I didn’t think much about it at the time, but it is something that comes sharply into focus as you get older. I did my research, and I’m very happy with that choice. REI Super is the default fund at Dethridge GROVES.’
‘You have to wonder where you might be if you paid more attention to your super when in your 20s.’
As Hayden Groves
‘Now that I’m in my 50’s, I often check my super balance. I love that you can go online anytime and see how your super is performing. In fact, there are so many cool parts of the REI Super website, such as insurance options, investment choices, calculators, and the like; I’m on there all the time.
‘As a business owner, I put profits into super in line with the caps and am disciplined to contribute maximum amounts annually. Who wouldn’t want to save a bit of tax and increase their retirement options?’
‘Understanding my risk profile was key (which you can do online with REI Super) to making investment choices within my super. I am conservative by nature but still wanted to get a better outcome than just being in the balanced option, which is a bit of a compromise to suit everyone at every life stage. Very glad I have.’
‘For everyone in your twenties reading this, can I strongly suggest you look closely at your super early. Look to what you can do to improve your investment opportunity in line with your risk profile. Set your strategy, check in often to see if any adjustment is needed in line with the investment climate and legislative changes, and you will be well ahead of the pack when the time comes to retire.’
