REI Super announces two new Member Elected Directors

REI Super, the first dedicated super fund for real estate established in Australia with a 9.45% net investment return on its Balanced (MySuper) option for the year ended 30 June 2023, is one of only a few industry funds to have Member Elected Directors on their Board of Trustees.

A call for nominations from the Fund’s membership to fill three Member Elected Director positions resulted in an uncontested nomination for the Queensland and Northern Territory electorate. However, elections were required for the New South Wales & Australian Capital Territory, and Victoria & Tasmania electorates.

The election process to fill the contested positions concluded on Friday 8 September 2023.

REI Super’s Independent Chair, Claire Higgins today announced the three successful candidates:

  • Tim Lawless – QLD & NT electorate

Tim is the Executive Research Director Asia Pacific for CoreLogic with 20 years of experience in the role. Tim is recognised as a leading authority on residential property and regularly provides expert commentary on real estate market conditions and the interplay between housing markets, demographic trends, and economic factors.

“I am deeply honoured and enthusiastic to assume my role on the REI Super board. I’m looking forward to the opportunity of making a meaningful contribution towards the financial wellbeing of fund members, collaborating with my fellow board members and the executive team, and further enhancing the overall value proposition of REI Super.”

  • Tim McKibbin – NSW & ACT electorate

Tim is the CEO of the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales with over 16 years of experience in this role and prior to that was REINSW’s Legal Counsel for three years. Tim regularly provides the voice of the real estate industry in NSW to the state government and the media.

Being on the Board of REI Super is a great honour, it will also come with great responsibilities. REI Super has a proud history of delivering high quality outcomes for its members. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

  • Richard Simpson – VIC & TAS electorate

Richard was appointed as a Member Elected Director of the board in October 2019. Richard is a Director and immediate past president of the Real Estate Institute of Victoria, the current Senior Vice President of the Real Estate Institute of Australia, and a 5th generation real estate professional, working out of his family run agency W.B. Simpson & Son, located in North Melbourne for the past 20 years.

I feel honoured to be re-elected by the REI Super members for a second term as a Director of REI Super. I am very excited to have the opportunity to continue the excellent work of our Board and Management team with our continued focus on improving member engagement, reducing fees and most importantly maintaining the strong performance of our investment portfolio.

Claire Higgins expressed her congratulations to the three gentlemen who will hold office as Member Elected Directors for a four-year term from 1 October 2023.

“Having Member Elected Directors on our Board means that our members have an opportunity to influence the leadership of their Fund. They enhance the understanding and representation of our membership and bring a wealth of knowledge of the real estate industry,” said Higgins.

Higgins went on to say, “The board are excited to welcome our two newly appointed Directors and the re-election of Richard as we continue to strive to achieve better retirement outcomes for our members and remain a top performing fund”.

REI Super will also farewell two Member Elected Directors who have made significant contributions over lengthy periods of time in Jonathan Blocksidge and Dianne Helmich who will be concluding their terms as of 30 September 2023.

Higgins went on to thank Jonathan and Dianne for their dedication and untiring efforts. She said “REI Super has benefited from Jonathan and Dianne’s commitment, knowledge, and expertise during their time with the Fund.  Jonathan provided leadership particularly in the area of risk governance, whilst Dianne led our claims committee in supporting the Fund and our members.  As Member Elected Directors, they were both tireless in driving our actions towards achieving better retirement outcomes for our members. We thank them both very much and wish them both the good health and happiness.”.

REI Super’s Balanced (MySuper) option achieved a net investment return of 9.45%, while its Growth option achieved a net investment return of 13.77% for the year ending 30 June 2023.
